Aquaculture
Aquaculture in Shetland has grown dramatically over the past 20 years and is now one of the pillars of the economy.
The importance of the industry is evident when you consider its value of £148m annually and the 1,167 direct and ancillary jobs it provides. The Trust currently has £4m invested across finfish farming, shellfish farming and hatcheries.
Salmon farming has been in decline over recent years but strong recovery is occuring. We have also seen diversification into other species and a market-orientated approach. The mussel farming industry continues to grow and show strong prospects, and a fledgling oyster farming industry has developed.
Shetland Development Trust aims to provide commercial financial assistance to help companies achieve sustainable growth.
