Diversification
We recognise the importance for industries to diversify and develop new products; it is an essential part of strengthening Shetland’s economy. We aim to help companies broaden their operations and develop new markets. This has been evident in fish farming over the last few years where salmon farming has diversified into farming other species such as halibut, cod and sea trout. There are also been a large increase in mussel and oyster farming through new entrants and existing finfish farms diversifying into shellfish.
Johnson Shellfish Ltd:
“Without the assistance of Shetland Development Trust, we wouldn’t have been able to diversify into mussel production. It provides job security against a background of economic decline in the salmon industry.”
Shetland Halibut Company:
"Without a loan from Shetland Development Trust it would not have been possible for us to diversify into halibut farming."
Johnson Sustainable Seafood:
SDT assisted the Company in equipping its new processing facility to take farmed organic cod from primary production right through to a value added packed and branded finished product for the supermarket shelves.
"We are delighted that the Shetland Development Trust and Shetland Islands Council are supporting the Company. The investment will assist a project that is pivotal to establishing Johnson Sustainable Seafoods' highly acclaimed sustainable cod in the retail and restaurant market place."
