SHETLAND DEVELOPMENT TRUST SECURES AGRICULTURAL ASSET
Following the conclusion of the legal process Shetland Development Trust has confirmed that they have purchased the Boddam slaughtering facility and surrounding land for £50,000. The facility has been bought from Magnus George Smith, sole trader, who has owned the premises since 1992.
Commenting on the investment, chairman of Shetland Development Trust, Josie Simpson, said: “We see the Boddam slaughtering facility as a strategic asset for Shetland. It is the only slaughterhouse in the islands that holds an EU licence for the slaughtering of cattle, sheep and pigs.
“The premises offers a valuable service to the wider Shetland agricultural industry. The building has subsequently been rented on an initial one year commercial lease to Pure Shetland Lamb Ltd.”
George Smith, director of Pure Shetland Lamb Ltd, said: “ We are pleased that Shetland Development Trust has invested in this facility and delighted to be able to lease it from them as this enables us to grow our business and explore new opportunities for the future, including our latest venture to export lambs to Italy.”
