Valued at £200 million, the seafood industry is the cornerstone of the social and economic structure of Shetland. Recognising the need to sustain this successful industry the Shetland Seafood Development Project (SSDP) was established.
The SSDP partners have recognised the need to provide strategic direction so that the Shetland seafood industry can better meet the challenges and take advantages of the opportunities that the global marketplace creates, thus increasing the value of industry in the future.
Following significant research and consultation the project partners have jointly developed a strategy for shetland seafood entitled "Successful and Sustainable" with a defined action plan for 2007/08. This is the first time industry, training, research and economic development bodies have come together and worked in such close collaboration to develop a strategy of this kind.
